Is BES or DTOD cheaper?

BES and DTOD cost about the same for a typical Illinois home (within $4 a year). They stay within about 1% of each other at every level of use from 200 to 2,500 kWh a month, with the same daily pattern of use. Adding an EV driven 1,000 miles a month and charged at each plan’s cheapest hour, DTOD gives the lower total ($169 against $177 a month).

What is the difference between BES and DTOD?

BES is flat: the same price at every hour, with a fixed charge of $20.75 a month. DTOD is time-of-use (summer weekdays: Super off-peak 12 am–6 am, Mid-peak 6 am–1 pm, Peak 1 pm–7 pm, Super off-peak 9 pm–12 am; lowest price 9 pm–6 am next day), with a fixed charge of $20.75 a month.

How the two plans work

BES: Basic Electric Service, single family (no electric space heat)

  • One price per kWh at every hour: 16.2¢ in July and 16.0¢ in January.
  • Shifting use to other hours changes nothing on this plan; using less is the only lever.
  • Fixed charge: $20.75 a month.

DTOD: Delivery Time-of-Day Pricing (fixed-price ComEd supply), single family (no electric space heat)

  • Super off-peak 12 am–6 am, Mid-peak 6 am–1 pm, Peak 1 pm–7 pm, Super off-peak 9 pm–12 am on July weekdays; 6 of 24 hours carry the top price of 21.7¢.
  • The cheapest July weekday hour costs 13.2¢, so moving 1 kWh out of the top hours saves 8.5¢.
  • January weekdays range from 13.0¢ to 21.5¢.
  • Summer pricing applies Jun–Sep; winter pricing Oct–May.
  • Fixed charge: $20.75 a month.
