Adding an EV driven 1,000 miles a month and charged at each plan’s cheapest hour, TOU-2 gives the lower total ($145 against $158 a month).

What is the difference between Schedule D and TOU-2?

Schedule D is tiered: the price per kWh rises with monthly use, with a fixed charge of $8.00 a month. TOU-2 is time-of-use (summer weekdays: Peak 4 pm–9 pm; lowest price 9 pm–4 pm next day), with a fixed charge of $4.96 a month.

How the two plans work

Schedule D: Domestic Service

  • In July the first 10 kWh a day cost 14.5¢ each; then 23.0¢ above 10 kWh a day.
  • An average California home (571 kWh in July) goes past the first tier, so extra load such as an EV is priced higher.
  • Fixed charge: $8.00 a month.

TOU-2: Domestic Time-of-Use

  • Peak 4 pm–9 pm on July weekdays; 5 of 24 hours carry the top price of 34.8¢.
  • The cheapest July weekday hour costs 18.2¢, so moving 1 kWh out of the top hours saves 16.6¢.
  • January weekdays range from 13.6¢ to 32.8¢.
  • Summer pricing applies Jul–Oct; winter pricing Nov–Jun.
  • Weekends differ: off-peak all day.
  • Fixed charge: $4.96 a month.
