Is SC1 or SC19 cheaper?

SC1 and SC19 cost about the same for a typical New York home (within $6 a year). SC1 is cheaper below about 800 kWh a month and SC19 above it, with the same daily pattern of use. Adding an EV driven 1,000 miles a month and charged at each plan’s cheapest hour, SC19 gives the lower total ($184 against $210 a month).

What is the difference between SC1 and SC19?

SC1 is tiered: the price per kWh rises with monthly use, with a fixed charge of $24.60 a month. SC19 is time-of-use (summer weekdays: Mid-peak 10 am–noon, Peak noon–7 pm, Mid-peak 7 pm–9 pm; lowest price 9 pm–10 am next day), with a fixed charge of $31.10 a month.

How the two plans work

SC1: Residential Service (O&R full-service supply)

  • In July the first 250 kWh a month cost 20.7¢ each; then 23.5¢ above 250 kWh a month.
  • An average New York home (784 kWh in July) goes past the first tier, so extra load such as an EV is priced higher.
  • Fixed charge: $24.60 a month.

SC19: Residential Time-of-Use (O&R full-service supply)

  • Mid-peak 10 am–noon, Peak noon–7 pm, Mid-peak 7 pm–9 pm on July weekdays; 7 of 24 hours carry the top price of 54.7¢.
  • The cheapest July weekday hour costs 12.2¢, so moving 1 kWh out of the top hours saves 42.5¢.
  • January weekdays range from 12.2¢ to 26.0¢.
  • Summer pricing applies Jun–Sep; winter pricing Oct–May.
  • Weekends differ: off-peak all day.
  • Fixed charge: $31.10 a month.
