R and R-TOU-P cost about the same for a typical Maryland home (within $16 a year). What is the difference between R and R-TOU-P?

R is flat: the same price at every hour, with a fixed charge of $8.93 a month. R-TOU-P is time-of-use (summer weekdays: Peak 2 pm–7 pm; lowest price 7 pm–2 pm next day), with a fixed charge of $8.93 a month.

How the two plans work

R: Residential Service

  • One price per kWh at every hour: 24.2¢ in July and 21.2¢ in January.
  • Shifting use to other hours changes nothing on this plan; using less is the only lever.

R-TOU-P: Residential Time-of-Use Program

  • Peak 2 pm–7 pm on July weekdays; 5 of 24 hours carry the top price of 43.7¢.
  • The cheapest July weekday hour costs 19.2¢, so moving 1 kWh out of the top hours saves 24.5¢.
  • January weekdays range from 17.7¢ to 33.0¢.
  • Summer pricing applies Jun–Sep; winter pricing Oct–May.
